What to tell us
Start with the basics, and add sensitive detail once we have agreed a safe channel.
- What happened, when and where, and who is involved.
- Why you think it matters to the public.
- How you know: what you saw, or where the information came from.
- Documents, images or records you can share, and whether others can confirm the story.
- Whether we may use your name, or you want to stay anonymous.
What happens next
- We read your message. A senior editor reviews every tip.
- We agree how to talk. If your information is sensitive, we move to the safest channel available to you.
- We check the facts. We verify what you tell us with other sources and documents before anything is published.
- We decide together on your identity. We discuss anonymity with you before publication and tell you how your information will be used.
What we promise, and what we cannot
- We will not reveal your identity without your agreement, except where compelled by a court of competent jurisdiction.
- Only the editors who need to know will see your details.
- We cannot guarantee any channel is fully secure, and we cannot promise to publish every tip.
- If your tip could put you at legal risk, consider speaking to a lawyer before you send it.
